Kylian Mbappe breaks World Cup scoring record with Golden Boot
The France captain secured the award after Argentina’s Lionel Messi failed to add to his goal tally in the World Cup final in New Jersey. Messi finished the tournament with eight goals. England midfielder Jude Bellingham and Norway striker Erling Haaland finished joint third on the scoring chart after each netted seven goals during the tournament.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward also won the Golden Boot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where France finished as runners-up. Mbappe further extended his record by scoring twice in Saturday’s third-place play-off. However, England won the match 6-4.

With 22 World Cup goals across three tournaments, Mbappe has become the highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history, moving one goal ahead of Lionel Messi. Despite the personal milestone, Mbappe said he would have preferred to play in the World Cup final rather than become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.
“I would have preferred not to be the all-time top scorer and to be playing tomorrow’s match,” Mbappe said after receiving the award. The latest achievement further cements Mbappe’s place among football’s greatest players and highlights his remarkable consistency on the biggest stage of international football.
