FIFA launches probe into World Cup final clash after Spain win
Spain secured their second men’s World Cup title after Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute. However, the celebrations were overshadowed by a heated confrontation involving players and coaching staff from both teams after the final whistle.
Argentina had already been reduced to 10 players during stoppage time in extra time after Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a straight red card from referee Slavko Vincic for a challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi.
The dismissal made Fernandez the first player to be sent off in a FIFA World Cup final since Netherlands defender John Heitinga was dismissed against Spain in the 2010 final. Videos shared on social media appeared to show Argentina defenders Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina clashing with Spain’s Eric Garcia and Rodri during the confrontation.
In an official statement, FIFA said: “Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC regarding the post-match incidents.”

The governing body added: “Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor’s report has been completed.”
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala also appeared to strike Spain midfielder Dani Olmo during the incident, while Nahuel Molina later confronted Rodri in another tense exchange. Rodri was also involved in a verbal confrontation with his former Manchester City teammate, Nicolas Otamendi, before tensions eased.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni and several players stepped in to calm the situation and prevent the confrontation from escalating further. FIFA’s investigation will determine whether disciplinary action will be taken against the players and officials involved in the post-match disturbances.
