Egypt's First World Cup Win Ever
Egypt played in their first World Cup back in 1934 and have also appeared at the tournament in 1990 and 2018, but had never won a single match across all those appearances until now. The win brought an end to 92 years without a World Cup victory.
Salah's Historic Night
Captain Mohamed Salah was the architect of Egypt's triumph, scoring the goal that put his side ahead for the first time before delivering the corner that led to Egypt's third. In doing so, the 34-year-old became Egypt's oldest-ever World Cup goal scorer, moved to within one goal of equalling head coach Hossam Hassan's all-time scoring record for the national team, and became the oldest African player on record to both score and assist in a single World Cup match. The performance also continued his remarkable run of scoring or assisting in every World Cup match he has played. Salah received a standing ovation from the Vancouver crowd when he was substituted in the 85th minute.
How the Match Unfolded
First Half: New Zealand Surprise Egypt
New Zealand stuck to a disciplined game plan and stunned Egypt early on. In the 15th minute, defender Finn Surman lost his marker at a corner and powered home a header to make it 1-0. Egypt's best chance of the half came when Salah curled a free kick just wide of the post. The All Whites defended resolutely to take their lead into halftime.
Second Half: Egypt Turn On The Style
Egypt were a different team after the break, gradually pushing New Zealand deeper into their own half.
58':Mohamed Hany whipped in a cross that Mostafa Zico headed home to level the score at 1-1.
67':Salah exchanged a quick one-two with Zico before sweeping a trademark finish into the far corner to give Egypt the lead for the first time.
82':From a corner delivered by Salah, substitute Mahmoud Trezeguet rose highest to head in Egypt's third and seal a famous win.

The win lifted Egypt to the top of Group G with their final group match still to come.
