Egypt and Iran share spoils in tense 1-1 draw
Egypt struck first in just the 5th minute, getting off to the perfect start in front of their fans. But Iran responded almost immediately, leveling things up in the 14th minute to make it 1-1, and that's exactly how the score stayed for the remaining 76 minutes, despite both sides pushing hard for a winner.
Egypt was clearly the team in control for long stretches, dominating possession at 62% to Iran's 38% and out-shooting their opponents 14 to 12, with three shots on target each.
Mohamed Salah was a constant threat for Egypt, with Trezeguet and Emam Ashour also looking dangerous in attack. But Iran's defense, anchored by Hossein Kanani and Shoja Khalilzadeh, stood firm and refused to give up a second goal, no matter how much territory they conceded.

Egypt picked up three yellow cards and Iran four, with bookings spread across both halves as tackles flew in and tempers occasionally flared. Mehdi Taremi led the line for Iran and gave their defense an outlet to relieve pressure when needed, even though his side managed only 38% of the ball for the whole match.
Goalkeepers on both sides played their part in keeping the score level. Egypt's Mostafa Shoubir and Iran's Alireza Beiranvand each came up with key stops when called upon, and neither team could find the breakthrough that would have settled the contest.

Both managers shuffled their lineups as the game went on, with Egypt using all five substitutions and Iran using three, but none of the changes were enough to break the deadlock.
The result means Egypt remains unbeaten across their opening matches, having also drawn earlier in the group, while Iran adds another draw to their tournament after also splitting the points 2-2 with New Zealand and 0-0 with Belgium in their previous outings.
Both Egypt and Iran will go into their final group games knowing this result keeps their qualification hopes very much alive, but also knowing a win was there to be taken on the night, and neither side managed to find it.
