DR Congo shock Portugal with 1-1 draw in World Cup opener
Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-equalling sixth World Cup began on a disappointing note as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo in their Group K match. DR Congo created history by earning their first-ever point at a World Cup finals, marking a proud moment for the African side on Wednesday.
Portugal started strongly and took an early lead in the 6th minute when Joao Neves headed in a precise cross from Pedro Neto, giving them a perfect start. Despite dominating possession, Portugal struggled to convert chances into goals. DR Congo stayed disciplined and waited for their opportunity.
That moment came just before half-time when Yoane Wissa rose above the defence to head home the equaliser, sending Congolese fans into celebration as the match turned 1-1. Ronaldo, 41, remained largely quiet throughout the game and was unable to influence the match as expected, missing key chances in the second half.

One of his attempts went wide after a pass from Francisco Conceicao, while another promising move also failed to produce a goal. DR Congo also came close to taking the lead when Cedric Bakambu hit the post with a strong effort, showing they were fully competing with the European giants.
Portugal thought they had regained control when Joao Cancelo scored a spectacular overhead kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The match ended in frustration for Portugal, who dropped points in their opening game, while DR Congo celebrated a historic achievement in their World Cup journey.
