Babar fit as Pakistan weigh four fast bowlers against England
Pakistan are weighing a pace-heavy combination for the opening Test of their three-match series against England. Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Abbas, Aamir Jamal and Khurram Shahzad are reportedly in contention.
The first Test will begin at Headingley in Leeds on August 19. Both teams are entering an important stage in their Test campaigns, making the opening match particularly significant.
Babar Azam has recovered from his recent fitness concerns and is expected to captain Pakistan. Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel have also recovered from injuries and are available for selection.
Imam-ul-Haq is another player expected to return to the playing XI. His recent performance in the warm-up match has strengthened his case for a place in the team.
Pakistan weigh four-pronged pace attack
Pakistan could select four specialist fast bowlers for the Headingley Test. The proposed combination would provide the team with extra pace and seam-bowling options against England’s strong batting lineup.
Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Abbas, Aamir Jamal and Khurram Shahzad are the four pacers reportedly being considered. Sajid Khan could be included as the main spin option.
The decision will depend heavily on the conditions at Headingley. Pakistan’s team management must decide whether to rely on extra pace or use another batter to strengthen the lower middle order.
A four-man pace attack could give Pakistan more options with the new ball. It could also help the team maintain pressure on England’s batters throughout long innings.
Babar, Shan and Saud boost Pakistan’s options
Babar’s return gives Pakistan additional experience in the top order and leadership group. His availability also gives the team management more flexibility when finalising the batting lineup.
Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel are also expected to be available after recovering from their respective injuries. Their return could improve Pakistan’s batting depth for the opening Test.
Pakistan received further encouragement during their recent warm-up match against a County Select XI. Saud scored a century, while Imam-ul-Haq made 80 runs.
Those performances have given the players useful match practice before facing England. They also provide the team management with stronger options while selecting the final XI.
Pakistan’s expected playing combination
Based on the players under consideration, Pakistan could line up with Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq at the top of the order.
Shan Masood is expected to bat in the top order, followed by Babar Azam as captain. Saud Shakeel could provide stability in the middle order, with Mohammad Rizwan taking the wicketkeeping role.
Salman Ali Agha could also feature as an all-round option. Aamir Jamal would provide both batting support and another pace-bowling option.
Sajid Khan is likely to be considered for the specialist spin role, while Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Ali could complete the pace attack.
The final XI, however, will only be confirmed after the team management assesses the pitch and weather conditions at Headingley.
England also face selection decisions
England are preparing for their own selection decisions before the series opener. Their expected lineup includes Emilio Gay, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook and Ollie Pope.
Dan Lawrence and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith are also expected to feature, while Gus Atkinson, Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer could lead the bowling attack.
The final bowling place could come down to Shoaib Bashir or Josh Tongue. England may decide between the two depending on the pitch and the balance they want for the Test.
Joe Root’s experience will remain important for England’s batting. Harry Brook will also be expected to play a major role against Pakistan’s pace attack.

Pakistan have recent success against England
Pakistan have won two of their last five Tests against England. Both victories came during the 2024 series played in Pakistan.
Pakistan won the Rawalpindi Test by nine wickets before defeating England by 152 runs in Multan. England won the other Multan Test by an innings and 47 runs.
England had previously won both Tests during their 2022 tour of Pakistan. They defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in Karachi and by 26 runs in Multan.
The recent results show that both teams have experienced contrasting fortunes in their meetings. The Headingley Test will provide another opportunity for Pakistan to challenge England in their home conditions.
The match is also part of the World Test Championship cycle. That gives both teams an added reason to start the series strongly and collect valuable points.
A major test for both teams
Pakistan are looking to make a strong start under Babar Azam’s renewed leadership. England, meanwhile, are beginning another important phase of their Test campaign with several key players expected to play major roles.
The first Test at Headingley will be followed by the second match at Lord’s from August 27 to 31. The third Test is scheduled for Edgbaston from September 9 to 13.
For Pakistan, the biggest question is whether four fast bowlers can give them the right balance. The Headingley conditions could ultimately decide whether the pace-heavy strategy becomes reality.
The opening match should reveal whether Pakistan’s pace strategy can challenge England effectively on home soil.
