Pakistan face must-win India clash in Hockey World Cup
Pakistan’s qualification hopes for the second phase of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 are hanging by a thread after a difficult start in Pool D.
The Green Shirts opened their campaign with a heavy 4-1 defeat against England. They then showed improvement against Wales but could only manage a 3-3 draw.
The draw gave Pakistan their first point of the tournament. However, they still need a strong result in their final Pool D match to remain in contention.
India clash becomes crucial
Pakistan will face arch-rivals India on August 19 in what could become the most important match of their campaign.
India also suffered a setback after losing 4-2 to England. That result stopped India from creating a clear advantage at the top of the group.
The situation means Pakistan still have a chance to move forward. However, the Green Shirts now have very little room for error.
A victory over India would give Pakistan a major boost and keep their qualification hopes alive. The result of the other Pool D match between England and Wales will also play an important role.
What Pakistan need to qualify
Pakistan’s clearest route is a victory against India combined with an England win over Wales.
If those results happen, Pakistan will secure a place in the Second Pool Phase. This would allow the Green Shirts to continue their campaign despite their disappointing opening result against England.
Pakistan could also benefit if England and Wales play out a draw. In that situation, a Pakistan victory over India would put them in a strong position for qualification.
The team will therefore be watching the England-Wales match closely while focusing on the challenge against India.
Wales result could complicate the race
The qualification picture becomes more difficult if Wales defeat England in the final Pool D match.
Such a result could create a tight race between the teams. Pakistan’s position may then depend on head-to-head records or goal difference, depending on the tournament rules.
That makes every goal potentially important for the Green Shirts. Pakistan will need both a strong performance against India and a favourable result from the other group match.
The team’s 3-3 draw against Wales could prove important in the final calculations. However, the earlier defeat against England has left Pakistan needing a much stronger finish.

Pakistan must respond under pressure
The Green Shirts have already shown signs of improvement after recovering from their opening defeat to earn a draw against Wales.
The India match will now test whether Pakistan can turn that improvement into a decisive result. A victory would keep their campaign alive, while a defeat could end their hopes of reaching the next phase.
The pressure will be high because India are also fighting for a place in the next round. Both teams will know that the final Pool D results could dramatically change the standings.
