According to the PCB, his appointment was made after a consultative process that considered his technical expertise, international experience and compatibility with the team. According to sources, the board is satisfied with Azhar Mahmood s coaching style.

Cricket experts say that Azhar Mahmood s presence could prove positive for the team, as he is familiar with the demands of modern cricket and has good connections with the players.
Under Azhar Mahmood s tenure, the Pakistan team will play two Test matches against South Africa in October 2025, and the team will travel to Bangladesh under his supervision in March 2026.
It should be remembered that previous coach Jason Gillespie resigned in December 2024, after which Aqib Javed took over coaching on an interim basis.
