Arshad Nadeem makes it to the Commonwealth Games final with 78.63m

Pakistan’s star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has secured a place in the Commonwealth Games final despite facing difficult conditions during qualification.

A strong headwind made it difficult for athletes to produce long throws throughout the qualification round.

No competitor managed to reach the automatic qualifying distance of 84 metres.

Arshad entered the event as one of the leading medal contenders and needed to finish among the top 12 athletes to reach the final.

His opening throw of 78.63 metres proved enough to put him in a strong position.

Arshad survives difficult qualification round

Arshad fouled his second attempt while trying to improve his distance.

The Pakistani athlete then recorded 75.65 metres with his third and final throw.

Although neither of his valid throws reached the automatic qualification mark, his first attempt was strong enough to secure his place in the final.

The conditions played a major role in the qualification round.

The strong wind affected the entire field and prevented several leading athletes from reaching their usual distances.

Arshad’s ability to qualify despite those conditions will give him another opportunity to compete for a medal in the final.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh leads qualification

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage produced the best throw of the qualification round.

Pathirage recorded 82.84 metres, finishing ahead of several leading competitors despite falling short of the automatic qualifying distance.

Grenada’s world champion Anderson Peters finished second with 81.29 metres.

South Africa’s Douw Smit recorded 80.64 metres, while England’s Benjamin East finished with 80.38 metres.

They were the only other competitors to break the 80-metre barrier during qualification.

The results show how difficult the conditions were for the athletes.

With no thrower reaching 84 metres, the final could produce much longer distances if weather conditions become more favourable.

Neeraj Chopra also reaches final

India’s Neeraj Chopra, one of Arshad’s biggest rivals in international javelin, also qualified for the final.

Chopra opened his campaign with a throw of 76.28 metres.

He improved significantly on his second attempt, reaching 79.61 metres.

That performance was enough for the Indian star to secure his place among the finalists.

The presence of both Arshad and Chopra is expected to add further interest to the final.

Their rivalry has attracted significant attention in international athletics, with both athletes having competed at major global events.

The final will give them another chance to compete for the top positions on a major international stage.

Muhammad Yasir Sultan misses out

Pakistan’s other competitor, Muhammad Yasir Sultan, could not qualify for the medal round.

Yasir fouled his opening attempt and then recorded throws of 71.42 metres and 74.36 metres.

Those distances were not enough to put him among the top 12 athletes advancing to the final.

His elimination means Pakistan’s medal hopes in the event will now depend on Arshad.

The pressure on Arshad will be significant, but his qualification performance has kept Pakistan in contention for another major athletics medal.

Final scheduled for Friday

The men’s javelin throw final is scheduled for Friday, July 31, at 7:45 PM Pakistan Standard Time.

Arshad will enter the final with the chance to improve significantly on his qualification distance.

The difficult conditions during qualification mean the final could look very different if the wind becomes more favourable.

The competition is expected to attract particular attention in Pakistan because of Arshad’s previous success at the Commonwealth Games.

Arshad’s Commonwealth Games record

Pakistan first competed at the Commonwealth Games in 1954.

Since then, the country has won 82 medals, including 27 gold, 27 silver and 28 bronze medals.

Pakistan’s strongest Commonwealth Games campaign in five decades came at the 2022 Birmingham Games.

A 68-member Pakistani contingent competed in 12 sports during those Games.

Pakistan finished 18th in the overall medal standings after winning eight medals.

Arshad produced one of the country’s most memorable performances at Birmingham.

He won the men’s javelin gold medal with a Games record throw of 90.18 metres.

That victory gave Pakistan its first Commonwealth Games athletics gold medal since 1962.
