Snowfall continued across several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday as a shallow westerly wave brought intense cold weather to the region, further worsening winter conditions.
In Skardu, heavy snowfall covered the city and surrounding mountains, with three to five inches of snow recorded in urban areas. The harsh weather pushed temperatures down to minus eight degrees Celsius, while nearby mountainous regions experienced even colder conditions, with temperatures falling to around minus 13 degrees. The thick snow blanket added to the scenic beauty but also caused significant hardship for residents.
Snowfall was also reported in Swat, where trees, roads, and rooftops were covered in snow. The cold spell disrupted daily life in upper areas, making travel difficult and increasing risks for commuters due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the westerly wave entered the upper parts of the country on January 16 and is expected to continue until January 19. The Met Office said the system is likely to intensify from January 20 and spread to most parts of Pakistan from January 21 onwards.
The PMD has forecast rain, thunderstorms, and light to moderate snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and upper KP over the next few days. Murree, Galliyat, and surrounding areas may also receive light rain and snowfall between January 18 and January 20.
Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain cautious, advising against unnecessary travel amid extreme cold, icy roads, and poor visibility.
