ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): The PMD forecasts rain and thunderstorms across upper and central Pakistan from August 13 to 15, warning of possible urban flooding and landslides.

Rain expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and northern areas

Rain and thunderstorms are expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi during the forecast period. Heavy rainfall in some areas could cause urban flooding, particularly in low-lying parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir and upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may also face a risk of landslides due to heavy rainfall. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain cautious during the wet spell.

Punjab districts likely to receive thunderstorms

Several districts of Punjab are likely to receive rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms. These include Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Sargodha, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Narowal.

Hafizabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Okara and Nankana Sahib are also expected to receive rain during the forecast period. Strong winds and thunderstorms may cause temporary disruptions in some areas.

Rain forecast for several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The Met Department has forecast rain and thunderstorms in several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Areas likely to be affected include Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Charsadda and Peshawar.

Kohat, Kurram, Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Dera Ismail Khan are also expected to receive rain and thunderstorms. Other areas of the province may also experience wet weather during the forecast period.

Heavy rain is possible in southern and southeastern Punjab

Parts of southeastern and southern Punjab are likely to experience partly cloudy weather and scattered thunderstorms. The weather is expected to affect some areas on August 12 and 13, with heavy rainfall possible at isolated locations.

Residents in affected districts should remain cautious, particularly during thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain. Weather conditions may change quickly in areas affected by strong winds and thunderstorms.

PMD warns of urban flooding and landslides

The Met Department has warned that heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could be particularly vulnerable to rain-related problems.

There is also a risk of landslides in mountainous areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir. Travellers and residents in hilly regions may need to remain alert to changing weather conditions and possible road disruptions.

Strong winds could damage vulnerable infrastructure

The Met Department has also warned that strong winds and thunderstorms could damage vulnerable trees, electricity poles and other infrastructure. Such weather conditions may lead to temporary disruptions to electricity supply and road travel in some areas.

People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during severe thunderstorms and take precautions in areas prone to flooding or landslides. Local authorities may also issue further advisories depending on the intensity of the rainfall.

Why the weather warning matters

The forecast is important because heavy monsoon rainfall can quickly affect daily life, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas. Urban flooding can disrupt traffic and damage property, while landslides may block roads in hilly regions.

Strong winds can also damage trees and electricity infrastructure, potentially causing temporary power disruptions. The overall impact will depend on the intensity and duration of rainfall in the affected areas.
