(Web Desk): Heavy overnight rainfall caused widespread urban flooding across Lahore, disrupting traffic, flights and daily life.

Torrential overnight rain has triggered severe urban flooding across Lahore, leaving major roads submerged, disrupting flights and causing widespread traffic chaos in several parts of the city.

Heavy rainfall continued intermittently through the morning, inundating residential areas and key roads. Localities including Cantonment, Defence, Walton, Ali View Gardens, Ali Park and Nadra Abad were among the worst affected, with several feet of water accumulating on streets and entering homes in low-lying areas.

The city's drainage system struggled to cope with the intense downpour, particularly in Lahore Cantonment, where residents reported streets resembling flowing streams. In Defence Phase III, rainwater entered homes in several blocks, while Walton Road, Cavalry Ground and Main Defence Road remained submerged, severely disrupting traffic.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the highest rainfall was recorded at Lahore Airport with 262 millimetres, followed by Manawan with 200 millimetres, Tajpur 151 millimetres, Kahna 142 millimetres, Shadipura 129 millimetres and Mughalpura 127 millimetres. Several other areas also received heavy rainfall.

The intense weather also affected flight operations at Allama Iqbal International Airport, where at least six domestic and international flights to and from Karachi, Dubai, Jeddah, Abu Dhabi and Istanbul were delayed. Airport authorities advised passengers to confirm flight schedules before travelling.

WASA Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed monitored drainage operations throughout the city as teams worked to remove standing water from major roads.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), provincial disaster management authorities and local administrations to remain on high alert. He ordered rescue agencies to strengthen emergency preparedness, closely monitor weather conditions and ensure timely relief measures in vulnerable areas as monsoon rains continue.
