A thick blanket of dense fog has severely disrupted road traffic across Punjab and other parts of Pakistan, prompting the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) to close multiple motorway sections to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.
According to official statements, visibility dropped to zero at several locations, making travel extremely hazardous, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours.
Motorways Closed Due to Low Visibility
The NHMP confirmed the closure of several major motorways due to persistent fog, including:
- M-3 from Jaranwala to Darkhana
- M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakeem and Gujra to Abdul Hakeem
- M-5 from Multan to Zahir Pir and onward to Sukkur
- M-2 from Thokar Niaz Baig to Kot Momin
- M-11 from Mehmood Booti to Sambrial
- M-14 from Hakla to Dera Ismail Khan
- Swat Expressway sections from Chakdara to Colonel Sher Khan Interchange
Officials said traffic diversions were implemented at several interchanges, while both northbound and southbound lanes were closed where visibility fell to dangerously low levels.

Highways and GT Road Also Affected
Dense fog also impacted key sections of GT Road (N-5) and N-55, particularly in central and southern Punjab, Sindh, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Visibility in some areas dropped to as low as 5 to 10 meters, significantly increasing the risk of collisions.
However, authorities confirmed that some routes in Balochistan, western Pakistan, and parts of Sindh remained clear, including highways connecting Hub, Quetta, Gwadar, and Kalat.
Motorway Police Issue Safety Advisory
The Motorway Police emphasized that motorway closures are a preventive measure to protect lives and property. Drivers were warned that lane violations and speeding in foggy conditions could result in fatal accidents.
Motorists have been advised to:
- Travel only between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm
- Use fog lights and low-beam headlights
- Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles
- Avoid unnecessary travel, especially at night
- Follow strict lane discipline
- Use alternate routes like GT Road where feasible

Ongoing Monitoring and Helpline Support
Authorities stated that fog conditions could worsen suddenly during the winter season. Additional closures may be imposed if visibility deteriorates further, particularly on high-speed corridors connecting major cities.
Citizens are urged to stay updated through official advisories and contact the Motorway Police helpline 130 for real-time traffic updates, route guidance, and emergency assistance.
