(Web Desk): Dense fog disrupted road travel across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, forcing motorway closures as authorities issued safety advisories amid low visibility.

Dense fog once again blanketed large parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), severely disrupting routine life and forcing the temporary closure of several key motorway sections due to extremely poor visibility.

According to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP), multiple motorway routes were shut overnight to protect lives and property amid hazardous driving conditions. The closures affected major intercity connections, leaving commuters stranded and causing traffic disruptions across both provinces.

The Motorway Police confirmed that the M1 (Peshawar–Swabi), M2 (Thokar Niaz Baig–Chakri), M3 (Faizpur–Darkhana), M4 (Pindi Bhattian–Shershah), M11 (Mahmood Boti–Sambrial), and M14 (Daud Khel–Esa Khel) were closed for all types of traffic as visibility dropped to dangerous levels.

Officials stressed that the decision was taken purely as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents, as fog-related crashes have historically surged during winter months. Authorities warned that lane violations and speeding during fog can lead to fatal accidents, urging motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules.

Safety Advisory for Motorists:

Despite partial reopening in some areas, the NHMP warned that dense fog is expected to return during late-night and early-morning hours, especially on high-speed routes. Motorists were advised to follow strict safety guidelines, including:

  • Reduce speed and drive cautiously
  • Use fog lights and low-beam headlights
  • Maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead
  • Avoid sudden lane changes or abrupt braking
  • Follow lane discipline at all times
  • Avoid unnecessary travel, particularly at night

Authorities further advised commuters to prefer daytime travel between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, when visibility conditions are relatively better. Where possible, travelers were encouraged to use alternative routes such as GT Road instead of motorways.

Continued Monitoring and Public Alerts:

The Motorway Police said monitoring teams remain deployed on major routes to manage traffic flow and respond swiftly to changing weather conditions. Officials emphasized that fog can intensify suddenly during winter, and additional closures or restrictions may be imposed if visibility deteriorates again.

Citizens were urged to stay informed through official advisories and contact the Motorway Police helpline 130 for real-time traffic updates, route guidance, or emergency assistance.

Authorities reiterated that public cooperation is crucial to ensuring road safety during the ongoing winter fog season across Punjab and KP.
