Cloudburst unleashes floods, sweeping away homes in Chilas
A powerful cloudburst triggered devastating flash floods in the Thor area of Chilas, causing widespread destruction to homes, farmland, livestock and vital infrastructure, according to local authorities and residents.
The worst-hit area was Thor Meik, where a sudden torrent of floodwater rushed down from the surrounding mountains, sweeping away a residential house, household belongings, livestock and a vehicle. A local mosque also suffered damage after being hit by the powerful floodwaters.
Residents said the floods also washed away around 200 grams of gold that had been extracted through gold placer mining, along with a large amount of cash, resulting in significant financial losses for the affected family.
Flood debris entered several homes, forcing residents to evacuate and salvage whatever belongings they could. The main road linking Thor with nearby areas was also cut off, leaving several communities isolated.
The flash floods spread to Thor Sheten, Thor Meik and other nearby locations, inundating agricultural land and damaging standing crops. Farmers fear heavy financial losses as large portions of cultivated fields have been buried under mud and debris.
With road access disrupted, local residents have launched rescue and relief efforts on a self-help basis. However, damaged roads and blocked routes have made it difficult for emergency responders and relief teams to reach the affected villages.
Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage, while residents have appealed for immediate government assistance to restore road connectivity, provide emergency relief and support families who have lost homes, livestock and livelihoods in the disaster.
