Monsoon set to intensify this week - Thunderstorms likely across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Rain-wind/thundershower is expected in most parts of the country during the current week, according to the Met Office.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), weak monsoon currents are continuously penetrating in upper/central parts of the country and is likely to intensify from 04th August. A westerly wave is likely to strengthen on 05th August. Under the influence of these meteorological conditions:

In Kashmir/Gilgit-Baltistan, rain-wind/thundershower with isolated heavyfalls is expected in Kashmir (Neelum valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur) from 04th to 07th August, while rain-wind/thunderstorm with isolated heavyfalls is expected in Gilgit-Baltistan (Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar) from 05th to 07th August with occasional gaps.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, rain-wind/thundershower with isolated heavyfalls is expected in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai Kurram, Kohat, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Hangu, Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Waziristan, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan from 04th to 07th August with occasional gaps.

In Punjab/Islamabad, rain-wind/thundershower with scattered heavyfalls is expected in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad and Kasur from 04th to 07th August. with occasional gaps. Rain-wind/thundershower is also likely in D.G. Khan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan and Bahawalpur on 06th August.

In Balochistan, mainly hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of the province. However, rain-wind/thundershower is expected in Northeastern/southern parts (Barkhan, Musakhel, Loralai, Sibbi, Zhob, Qilla Saifullah and Khuzdar) on 06th August.

In Sindh, mainly hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of the province. However, cloudy weather with light rain/drizzle is expected in coastal areas during the period.

Possible Impacts and advises

Heavy rains may generate flash floods in local nullahs/streams of Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Northeast Punjab and Kashmir from 05th to 07th August.

Heavy falls may cause urban flood in low lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore and Sialkot on 05th to 07th August.

Landslides/mudslides may cause roads closure in the vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir during the forecast period.

Heavy falls/windstorm and lightning may damage weak structures like roof/wall of Kacha houses, electric poles, bill boards, vehicles and solar panels etc during the forecast period.

Public, Travelers and tourists are advised to avoid unusual exposure to vulnerable areas to avoid any untoward situation and keep updated about latest weather conditions.
