Sindh to launch women-only e-taxi service with female drivers

The announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon during a meeting with a high-level delegation from the British High Commission at his residence.

Memon said the new electric taxi service will be operated by female drivers and will be available exclusively for female passengers. He said the initiative aims to provide women with a safe, reliable and convenient mode of transportation.

He added that the Sindh government is also developing electric vehicle charging stations and other essential infrastructure to encourage investment in the growing electric vehicle (EV) sector. The minister said the project is part of the provincial government’s broader efforts to improve women’s mobility and increase their participation in social and economic activities.

Memon highlighted that the government is already providing free pink electric scooters to working women and female students. He said the initiative is making travel easier for women while promoting their financial independence and social empowerment.

He also highlighted a significant increase in the number of women applying for driving licences in Sindh. According to the minister, only around 450 women applied for driving licences a few years ago. That number has now risen to 25,000, reflecting growing confidence among women to drive and travel independently.

Memon said this positive change has helped challenge the long-standing perception that women cannot drive cars or motorcycles. He added that the Sindh government is committed to providing equal opportunities for women to progress in every field.

The women-only e-taxi service is expected to become another major step towards safer public transportation and greater economic empowerment for women across Sindh.
