The Punjab government’s flagship welfare initiative “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” program has achieved a major milestone by meeting its target of providing 160,000 housing loans ahead of schedule, marking a significant step in expanding affordable housing across the province.

Officials said that under the program, Rs211 billion has already been disbursed for the construction of houses, making it one of the largest low-cost housing finance schemes in Pakistan’s history. The initiative aims to provide shelter to low-income and deserving families by supporting them in building their own homes.

According to a government spokesperson, 102,645 houses have been completed so far, while thousands of families have already moved into their newly built homes. Construction activity continues at a rapid pace, with over 100,000 homes nearing completion across various districts.

The program is also witnessing ongoing development work, as more than 31,000 houses remain under construction. Authorities further confirmed that construction of an additional 26,000 houses will begin soon as part of the next phase of expansion.

Officials highlighted that the scheme is not only focused on financing but also on ensuring timely completion of housing units to address Pakistan’s growing housing shortage. The initiative has been described as a major step toward improving living standards for low-income communities.

The Secretary of Housing stated that the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” program has received international recognition, including appreciation at the World Urban Forum for its innovative and large-scale approach to affordable housing.

He added that the government remains committed to continuing housing reforms and expanding residential facilities across Punjab to ensure more families achieve the dream of owning a home.
