Punjab to launch electric buses in rural areas: Maryam Nawaz
Punjab Chief Minister has announced that electric bus services are being introduced in rural areas for the first time in the province’s history. She said the initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to improve infrastructure, transportation, and public services in villages across Punjab.
In her message on the International Day for Rural Development, the chief minister praised rural communities for their important role in national development, agriculture, and food security. She said a strong rural economy is the foundation of a developed and prosperous Pakistan.
Maryam Nawaz said villages play a key role in the country’s progress. She added that rural communities not only support agriculture but also preserve traditions and values that represent the true spirit of society.
She said the Punjab government is committed to improving the lives of people living in villages by providing better education, healthcare, skills training, and employment opportunities. She added that special attention is being given to clean drinking water, modern agriculture, and the development of basic infrastructure.
The chief minister said rural areas have great potential to strengthen food security, create economic opportunities, and support long-term growth. She added that investing in villages means building stronger and more resilient communities.
Maryam Nawaz said the Suthra Punjab Programme is now fully operational in rural areas as well as urban centres. She also announced that electric bus services are being launched in villages for the first time to provide modern, environmentally friendly public transportation.

She said the Apna Khet, Apna Rozgar scheme has been introduced specifically for unemployed people living in rural areas. She added that work is also continuing on the Model Village Project, which will provide urban-style facilities in more than 2,400 villages, including water filtration plants, parks, and children’s playgrounds.
The chief minister further said that construction and rehabilitation work on more than 3,300 kilometres of rural roads is underway through over 1,500 development projects under the Local Roads Programme.
She added that the Sohne Pind Punjab De programme is also improving village life by constructing paved streets, repairing roads, developing children’s parks, and carrying out tree plantation campaigns across rural Punjab.
