Punjab to install fire hydrants around major hospitals
The Punjab Housing Department has ordered the installation of fire hydrants around major government hospitals across the province, including Lahore.
The decision follows a tragic fire incident in Islamabad that claimed innocent lives. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities to conduct a detailed review of fire prevention and emergency safety arrangements at major public hospitals.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at strengthening firefighting facilities and improving emergency response in and around healthcare facilities.
57 hospitals selected initially
In the first phase, authorities have prepared a list of 57 government hospitals across Punjab where fire hydrants will be installed according to local requirements.
The facilities include Rural Health Centres (RHCs), Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) hospitals, District Headquarters (DHQ) hospitals and other major medical facilities.
All relevant Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) authorities have been directed to identify suitable locations and arrange the required installations.
Existing hydrants to be checked
Authorities will also immediately inspect existing fire hydrants located near major government hospitals to determine whether they are available and fully operational.
Rescue 1122 and other relevant departments are being provided support to strengthen emergency preparedness and improve coordination during potential fire incidents.
Hospital firefighting infrastructure upgraded
The Housing Department and allied institutions will assist in installing additional hydrants and upgrading existing firefighting infrastructure around hospitals.
Officials said the improvements are intended to ensure quicker access to water during emergencies and strengthen firefighting capabilities at critical healthcare facilities.
The government is also expected to identify gaps in existing safety arrangements during the review and take further measures where necessary.
The initiative highlights renewed efforts to improve fire preparedness at public hospitals and reduce risks to patients, visitors and medical staff during emergencies.
