The Punjab Assembly has approved a traffic fines amendment bill, significantly reducing penalties for multiple vehicle categories under the updated Motor Vehicle Ordinance.
The new law will come into effect following approval by Sardar Saleem Haider, offering financial relief to motorists across the province.
Reduced Fines for Motorcycles and Rickshaws
Under the revised structure:
- Motorcycle fines now range between Rs.1,000 and Rs.2,000
- Several violations previously fined up to Rs.2,000 have been reduced to Rs.1,000
For rickshaws:
- Minor violations reduced from Rs.3,000 to Rs.1,000
- Serious violations now fixed at Rs.2,000

Lower Penalties for Cars, Jeeps, and Luxury Vehicles
The amendment introduces major reductions for private vehicles:
- Car and jeep fines reduced from Rs.5,000 to Rs.2,000
- Luxury vehicle penalties cut from Rs.20,000 to Rs.10,000
- Vehicles up to 2000cc now face fines ranging from Rs.2,000 to Rs.10,000
However, authorities confirmed that overspeeding fines remain unchanged for all vehicle categories.
Relief for Public Transport and Heavy Vehicles
The new policy also benefits transport operators:
- Light transport vehicles (Mazda, Coaster, vans) fines reduced from Rs.20,000 to Rs.7,000
- Heavy transport vehicles (trucks, buses) now face a maximum fine of Rs.10,000, down from Rs.20,000
Objective: Balanced Enforcement and Public Relief
Officials say the amendment aims to rationalize traffic penalties while maintaining enforcement to ensure road safety.
The move is expected to ease the financial burden on drivers while encouraging compliance with traffic laws across Punjab.
