Punjab plans to ban hidden-camera glasses and pens
Punjab prepares ban on spy gadgets
The proposed Punjab hidden-camera ban will cover devices fitted with secret cameras that can record people without their knowledge. The government is concerned that these gadgets may be used for illegal surveillance, harassment and blackmail.
The provincial Home Department is expected to issue a formal notification within a few days. The delay is intended to give traders time to remove the devices from shops and online marketplaces.
The proposed spy gadgets ban Punjab aims to protect personal privacy and sensitive information, particularly for women and children. Authorities have warned of strict legal action against the illegal sale, purchase and use of covert electronic devices.
Lahore High Court examines smart glasses
The decision comes as the Lahore High Court (LHC) hears a petition challenging the unregulated import and sale of smart glasses fitted with cameras and microphones.
The petitioner has raised concerns about privacy, personal dignity and national security. The petition also states that these devices are openly available in shops and online marketplaces in Lahore.
On Thursday, the court directed the federal government to forward a summary on the issue to the federal cabinet. The proposed smart glasses ban could bring further attention to how these recording devices are sold and used.
The Punjab hidden-camera ban is intended to address concerns about secret recording, while the court case focuses on the regulation of smart glasses.

Government also targets illegal weapons
In a separate decision, the Punjab cabinet has approved a plan to address the possession of illegal weapons. The Home Department will update the relevant law and launch a public awareness campaign.
According to Qazi, a digital system will allow people to surrender or register unlicensed weapons at designated locations. Authorities have yet to announce the locations.
Officials will check whether the weapons are linked to criminal cases or appear in police records.
New registration and licence options
The proposed system will also allow eligible individuals to register weapons in their names and renew their arms licences.
However, some citizens have complained that the provincial government is not accepting applications for new arms licences.
The spy gadgets ban Punjab and the separate weapons plan address different concerns, but both involve stronger checks and regulation.
The smart glasses ban would focus on privacy, while the weapons framework would improve records of ownership.
