Punjab launches crackdown on Eid fare overcharging
The Punjab government has announced strict measures to protect passengers from overcharging and poor transport services ahead of Eidul Azha, when thousands of people travel across the province to celebrate with their families.
On the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, deputy commissioners and district police officers have been directed to carry out special inspections at bus terminals, transport stands and passenger vehicles throughout the province.
According to official instructions, every bus and bus stand must clearly display approved fare lists so passengers can easily check ticket prices and report violations. Authorities warned that transporters found involved in overcharging could face cancellation of route permits and suspension of bus stand licenses.
The government has also decided to launch strict action against vehicles operating without valid fitness certificates during Eid holidays. Transport owners have been ordered to follow all safety regulations and avoid overloading passengers.
Officials said arrangements for cold drinking water at bus terminals will also be ensured to provide relief to travelers during the ongoing hot weather and heatwave conditions in Punjab.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Transport Department has established a special helpline, 1071, for passengers to register complaints regarding excessive fares or other transport-related issues during Eid travel.
The move comes as overcrowding and fare hikes are commonly reported during Eid holidays due to increased passenger demand. Authorities believe tighter monitoring this year will help provide relief and safer travel facilities to the public.
