(Web Desk): Punjab's Laptop Scheme Phase 2 will require NADRA verification for eligible students, while the launch date for the next distribution phase is yet to be announced.

The Punjab government has decided to make NADRA verification mandatory for students applying under the Punjab Laptop Scheme Phase 2, adding a new step to ensure transparency in the distribution process. However, despite the latest decision, authorities have not yet announced when the second phase of laptop distribution will officially begin, leaving thousands of students waiting.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Laptop Steering Committee, where officials discussed the next phase of the initiative aimed at providing laptops to talented students studying in public sector universities and colleges across Punjab.

NADRA verification to ensure transparency

According to officials, all eligible students will now have their records verified through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) before laptops are distributed.

The verification process is intended to confirm applicants' identities and ensure that only deserving students receive laptops under the merit-based scheme. Authorities believe the move will help eliminate duplicate applications and reduce the chances of irregularities in the selection process.

Officials said the final approval for distributing laptops in the second phase will be obtained from the Chief Minister through a formal summary before the project moves forward.

Phase 2 schedule still undecided

While the committee agreed on the verification process, it could not finalize the schedule for launching the second phase of laptop distribution.

The Punjab Higher Education Department has yet to prepare a complete implementation schedule, meaning students will have to wait longer for an official announcement.

Thousands of students across Punjab have been eagerly awaiting updates, particularly those who have already completed the registration process and meet the eligibility criteria.

Some students still waiting from Phase 1

Officials also acknowledged that several students in the Sahiwal Division who qualified during the first phase have still not received their laptops.

The delay has raised concerns among students, many of whom say laptops are essential for online learning, research, assignments, and skill development.

Education experts believe clearing all pending distributions from the first phase should remain a priority before the government begins distributing laptops under the second phase.

One lakh students to benefit

The Punjab government aims to distribute 100,000 laptops during the second phase of the scheme.

The merit-based initiative was launched last year to support higher education students by improving access to digital learning resources. During Phase 1, more than 40,000 students received laptops under the program.

Officials say the expanded second phase reflects the government's commitment to promoting digital education and helping students improve their academic performance.

Students waiting for official announcement

Although the verification process has now been approved, students are still waiting for the government to announce the official distribution schedule and eligibility timeline.

Many students have urged the Higher Education Department to release clear details regarding application verification, distribution dates, and district-wise allocation so they can prepare accordingly.

Education observers say the Laptop Scheme has become one of Punjab's most significant student welfare initiatives, helping thousands of young people gain access to technology for education, research, freelancing, and digital skills.

Until an official notification is issued, students are advised to rely only on announcements from the Punjab government and the Higher Education Department regarding the next phase of laptop distribution.
