Punjab introduces biometric verification for birth, death and marriage certificates
The new system will verify citizens’ identities through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The system has been launched through a partnership between the Punjab Local Government Department and NADRA. Officials say it will help make official records more accurate and ensure that certificates are issued to the right people.
New Biometric System Launched in Sheikhupura
The new Computerised Registration Management System (CRMS) biometric facility has been introduced in Punjab’s union councils. Provincial Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq formally inaugurated the system in Sheikhupura.
Under the new procedure, biometric verification will be required when issuing birth, death and marriage certificates. The process is intended to identify applicants correctly and prevent illegal registrations based on false information.
NADRA Verification to Help Stop Fake Certificates
The system will check citizens’ identities against NADRA’s database before certificates are issued. This measure aims to reduce fake entries and prevent the preparation of fraudulent official documents.
The new verification process is also expected to improve the reliability of local government records. Authorities hope it will make it harder for people to obtain certificates using incorrect details or false identities.
Government Promises Transparent Public Services
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Zeeshan Rafiq said the biometric system would improve the accuracy of government records and help ensure that authentic documents are issued. He also stressed the importance of providing timely local government services without favouritism or bribery.
The minister said providing services without the need for recommendations or bribes was among the government’s priorities. He added that the new system would improve transparency and discourage illegal registrations.
System to Expand Across Punjab
According to the minister, the biometric system will be introduced in all union councils across Punjab in phases under the Digital Punjab vision. The expansion aims to make modern local government services more accessible and convenient for citizens.
The initiative is designed to make birth, death and marriage registrations more secure and reliable throughout the province. Its effectiveness will depend on how smoothly the system is implemented and how consistently verification rules are followed.
Biometric verification could help reduce fake certificates and improve public trust in official records. However, citizens will also need a smooth process so that verification does not cause unnecessary delays in obtaining essential documents.
