Punjab govt abolishes vacancies in Health Department
Officials said the decision is part of the government’s ongoing reforms to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary spending. Existing employees will not be affected.
According to an official notification, the abolished positions ranged from BPS-1 to BPS-16. These posts had remained vacant for a long time and have now been permanently removed from the department’s sanctioned strength.
Why were the posts removed?
Officials said the Punjab Govt abolishes vacancies initiative is intended to streamline the provincial workforce, reduce salary liabilities, and ease pressure on the provincial budget.
The government believes removing long-vacant positions will help departments operate more efficiently while improving financial management.
Part of a wider reform programme
The latest Punjab Govt abolishes vacancies decision is part of a broader campaign to eliminate long-unfilled posts across different government departments before the new fiscal year.
In recent months, the provincial administration has also abolished thousands of vacant positions in the School Education Department and other public institutions as part of administrative restructuring and fiscal reforms.

Existing employees will not be affected
Officials clarified that the move applies only to vacant posts. Employees currently working in the Health and Population Department will continue their duties without any changes.
However, the decision is expected to reduce future government recruitment opportunities in the department, leading to concerns among job seekers and public sector employee organisations.
What does this mean for job seekers?
The abolition of 10,898 vacant posts means fewer government jobs may become available in the Health and Population Department in the future.
While the government says the decision will improve efficiency and reduce expenditure, many people believe it could make public sector employment more competitive.
