While discussions of frugality continue in the wake of the Iran war, the Punjab government has approved the purchase of new vehicles for VIP officials.
Documents obtained reveal that the vehicles will cost a total of Rs. 523.5 million. The provincial government has sanctioned the purchase of 20 Toyota Fortuner at Rs. 372.7 million and 12 Toyota Hilux vehicles at Rs. 112.6 million.
The approved budget also includes provisions for installing special security arrangements in these vehicles. Features such as night vision, thermal cameras, and other advanced security equipment will be incorporated as part of the project to ensure the safety of VIP passengers.
Finance department had raised objections regarding the purchase of Toyota Fortuner, labeling them as luxury vehicles. Despite these concerns, the Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, accepted the recommendations put forward by the transport wing and approved the acquisition of the vehicles.

The decision has sparked discussions about the balance between governmental spending on VIP security and the need for fiscal prudence, especially during times when public resources are under pressure. Critics argue that while security is important, such high-value purchases raise questions about priorities in public expenditure.
The approval reflects the provincial government’s stance on ensuring the safety of officials while moving forward with high-cost projects, even amid calls for austerity.
