(Web Desk): Government plans fuel subsidy for bikers and rickshaws as prices rise, while assuring sufficient national reserves.

The federal government is considering a targeted fuel subsidy for motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers after a sharp petrol price hike.

Officials informed the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum that a relief package is under review to ease the burden on small vehicle users. Hamed Yaqoob Sheikh said the plan is inspired by a similar initiative introduced in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The move comes as fuel prices surged due to regional tensions and disruptions in global energy supply routes. Lawmakers raised concerns over the increase, but officials clarified the hike was meant to discourage hoarding rather than benefit oil companies.

Authorities assured the committee that Pakistan currently has sufficient fuel reserves. Petrol stocks are available for about 27 days, diesel for 21 days, and jet fuel for around 14 days. Crude oil reserves stand at approximately 11 days, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) is available for about nine days.

To maintain supply, the government has also allowed the import of petroleum products below Euro 5 standards.

In a separate meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, officials confirmed that fuel demand for March has been fully secured, with supplies expected to last until mid-April.

However, concerns persist as LNG shipments from Qatar have been disrupted since March 2, forcing reduced gas supply to the power sector and raising the possibility of costly spot purchases.

Authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation to prevent shortages and ensure stability.
