Punjab extends 30-day outdoor drone ban over security concerns

According to the Punjab Home Department, the extension has been issued under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898. Authorities have directed provincial administrations and police to ensure strict implementation of the order.

Outdoor drone flights remain prohibited

Under the extended order, flying drones in outdoor and open areas will remain prohibited across Punjab. The restriction applies to unauthorised drone operations and is intended to support public safety and maintain law and order.

The government has also stressed the need to protect public and private property while the ban remains in effect. Drone operators will continue to face restrictions on outdoor flights unless their activities fall under specifically approved exemptions.

Limited indoor drone use allowed

Although outdoor drone flights are banned, the order allows the limited use of small drones during events held inside halls and marquees. However, event organisers will be responsible for ensuring that drones are operated safely.

They will also have to make sure that drone use does not create risks for guests, staff or property. The limited indoor permission does not mean that drone operations are generally allowed across Punjab. Restrictions on outdoor flights remain in place.

Agricultural and research use allowed with permission

The government has also provided exemptions for certain activities related to agriculture, irrigation and research.

However, drones cannot be used for these purposes without prior written permission. Operators must obtain approval from the district-level ‘Safe Drone Usage Committee’ before using drones for agricultural, irrigation or research activities.

The Home Department said drone use for these purposes would only be considered exempt after the committee grants written permission. The requirement is intended to ensure that authorised drone operations can be monitored by the relevant authorities.

Intelligence and law enforcement agencies exempt

Intelligence and law enforcement agencies will remain exempt from the restrictions. This allows authorised government agencies to continue using drones where required for official duties and security-related activities.

The exemption is separate from the permission process for agricultural, irrigation and research activities. Private operators and other users must therefore follow the applicable restrictions and obtain approval where required.
