LAHORE (Web Desk): Punjab declares August 14 a public holiday to mark Independence Day, with government offices and most institutions set to remain closed across the province.

Punjab announces August 14 public holiday

The Punjab government has announced a public holiday across the province on August 14 to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day.

The Services and General Administration Department has issued a notification confirming the holiday. According to the notification, Friday, August 14, will be observed as a public holiday throughout Punjab.

Government offices and most public institutions will remain closed during the holiday. The announcement will allow citizens to take part in Independence Day celebrations and national events across the province.

Government offices to remain closed

The public holiday will apply to government offices and most institutions across Punjab. Employees working in government departments will not be required to attend their offices on August 14 unless their services fall under essential or emergency categories.

The holiday is part of province-wide arrangements for Independence Day, which is celebrated every year with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes, and other public activities. Citizens are expected to observe the day through various events and celebrations.

Emergency services to continue

Despite the public holiday, emergency services will remain operational across Punjab.

The government has made arrangements to ensure that essential services continue to be provided to citizens during the holiday. Hospitals, emergency response services, and other departments providing essential public services may therefore continue their operations.

The decision is aimed at ensuring that the holiday does not affect services required during emergencies or other urgent situations. Citizens will continue to have access to essential services despite the closure of most government offices.

Independence Day celebrations planned

Pakistan celebrates Independence Day on August 14 every year to commemorate the country’s independence in 1947. The day is marked by flag-hoisting ceremonies, national songs, public gatherings, and special programmes.

Government institutions, educational organisations, and private groups often arrange activities to mark the occasion. The public holiday allows government employees and citizens to participate in these activities while observing the national day.

What the holiday means for citizens

For most government employees, August 14 will be a day off from regular office duties. Citizens planning to visit government departments should avoid scheduling routine administrative work for the holiday.

However, essential and emergency departments will continue to provide necessary services. People are advised to check with individual institutions if they need to access a specific service on the holiday.

Independence Day holiday across Punjab

The provincial notification means the holiday will be observed across Punjab rather than being limited to specific cities or districts. This will allow people in different parts of the province to participate in Independence Day activities.

Major cities and smaller communities are expected to hold ceremonies and programmes to mark the occasion. The holiday also provides families and communities with an opportunity to celebrate the national day.
