The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that all mobile SIM cards remaining inactive for 180 consecutive days will be blocked and made available for reissuance to new users. Any SIM not used for calls, text messages, or internet services during this period will be deactivated under the new policy.
According to PTA officials, the decision aims to enhance mobile network performance and prevent illegal activities carried out through unused or unnecessary SIM cards. Authorities noted that inactive SIMs are often exploited for fraud, scams, and other unlawful practices, causing financial losses to consumers, telecom companies, and institutions.
The regulator clarified that the policy will be implemented across all mobile operators in Pakistan and that the process will be conducted in a transparent and fair manner. Once blocked, these SIMs may be reassigned to new users to ensure optimal utilization of available mobile numbers.
PTA advised subscribers who wish to keep their SIMs active to ensure some form of usage within the 180-day period. Making a call, sending a message, or using mobile internet will be sufficient to maintain active status and avoid disconnection.

Officials said the move is also part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and strengthen security within the telecom sector. By reducing the number of dormant SIMs, the authority believes mobile services will become more reliable and safer for users.
PTA has assured consumers that awareness campaigns will be launched to inform the public about the policy and its implications. Users have been urged to regularly check their SIM activity to avoid inconvenience.
The authority reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers while ensuring efficient use of national telecom resources.
