Pakistani electricity consumers may soon face another increase in their monthly power bills after a request was submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase of 82 paisas per unit under the fuel price adjustment mechanism for May 2026.

According to NEPRA, the application has been filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which is responsible for purchasing electricity from power generation companies and supplying it to distribution companies across the country. The regulator has scheduled a public hearing on the matter for June 30, after which a final decision will be made.

If approved, the proposed adjustment is expected to place an additional financial burden of around Rs12 billion on electricity consumers nationwide. The increase would be reflected in future electricity bills, adding to the challenges already faced by households and businesses dealing with rising living and operational costs.

The CPPA stated in its submission that the average fuel cost for electricity generation during May stood at Rs9.25 per unit. Fuel price adjustments are a routine mechanism used to pass fluctuations in power generation costs on to consumers, depending on changes in fuel prices and the country's energy mix.

Energy experts say the final impact on consumers will depend on NEPRA’s review of generation data and fuel costs. Consumer groups, meanwhile, have expressed concern over the continued rise in electricity expenses, arguing that frequent tariff adjustments place significant pressure on household budgets.

The regulator is expected to announce its decision after reviewing stakeholder feedback during the upcoming hearing.
