GILGIT-BALTISTAN (Web Desk): Pakistani well-known mountaineer Asma Mushtaq has died after suffering from a medical emergency while descending Spantik peak in Pakistan Karakoram range.

Successful summit turns tragic

The 34-year-old Pakistani mountaineer had successfully reached the summit of Spantik mountain, which stands at 7,027 metres in Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, Asma Mushtaq was in good health when she reached the summit.

Her successful climb, however, took a tragic turn during the descent.

The Spantik peak expedition became dangerous when she developed a serious medical emergency at an altitude of around 6,400 metres, or nearly 21,000 feet.

Emergency strikes during descent

The medical emergency occurred while Asma Mushtaq was making her way down from the summit.

At such extreme altitudes, climbers face very low oxygen levels, freezing temperatures, exhaustion and rapidly changing weather conditions.

The incident highlights the dangers of climbing a Spantik mountain even after successfully reaching its summit.

The descent can be particularly challenging because climbers are often physically exhausted after completing the difficult climb.

Alpine Club confirms tragedy

The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed details of the incident in statements issued on Thursday.

The club said the Pakistani mountaineer had successfully climbed the 7,027-metre peak and was reportedly healthy at that time.

However, her condition became critical at around 6,400 metres during the descent.

The Asma Mushtaq death has brought renewed attention to the serious risks involved in high-altitude mountaineering.

A major loss for mountaineering

The Spantik peak is one of Pakistan’s prominent high-altitude climbing destinations.

Located in the Karakoram range, the Spantik mountain attracts climbers because of its challenging terrain and high elevation.

For the Pakistani mountaineer, reaching the summit was a major achievement before the expedition ended in tragedy.

The Asma Mushtaq death also shows that reaching the top of a mountain is only one part of a high-altitude expedition.

Climbers can still face serious medical problems during their return journey, when their bodies are already under extreme physical stress.

Why high-altitude climbs are dangerous

At elevations above 6,000 metres, the body receives significantly less oxygen than at sea level.

This can increase the risk of serious altitude-related illnesses and make even simple physical activity extremely difficult.

Rescue operations are also challenging in remote mountainous areas because of difficult terrain, extreme weather and limited access.

The Asma Mushtaq death is therefore a tragic reminder of the risks faced by climbers attempting some of the world’s most demanding peaks.
