(Web Desk): Pakistan is preparing to update its legal framework for Pakistan Standard Time (PST) at GMT+5 to match the time zone.

The proposed change will correct a decades-old difference between the law and the time followed in practice.

The Standard Time (Interpretation and References) Amendment Bill seeks to remove the old GMT+5:30 reference from the 1943 law. It will replace the reference with GMT+5, which Pakistan already follows.

Bill clears National Assembly and Senate

The amendment has been approved by both the National Assembly and the Senate. It now requires presidential assent before the change can officially take effect.

The parliamentary approval clears an important step in correcting the legal definition of Pakistan Standard Time. The change is mainly focused on updating the wording of the existing law.

No change to clocks or daily routine

Officials have clarified that people will not need to change their clocks after the amendment. Office hours, school timings and normal daily routines will also remain unchanged.

Pakistan has already been operating on GMT+5 in practice for many years. The amendment will therefore bring the legal definition in line with the time zone already being used.

Why the legal change matters

The move is intended to remove confusion created by the outdated reference in the 1943 legislation. It will give Pakistan’s standard time framework a legal definition that matches its current practice.

The amendment is not a move to introduce a new time zone. Instead, it is a correction to an old legal reference that has remained unchanged for decades.

The change is mostly legal and administrative rather than a change people will notice in daily life. Clocks and regular timings will stay the same.

The main purpose is to make the law match the time Pakistan already follows. Once presidential assent is given, the updated reference can become part of the country’s standard time law.
