KABUL (Web Desk): More than 700 trucks carrying humanitarian aid have entered Afghanistan through Pakistan, keeping a vital relief route open despite a near-total land border closure between the two countries.

Over 700 relief trucks enter Afghanistan

More than 700 trucks carrying international humanitarian aid have reached Afghanistan through Pakistan, according to the United Nations. The convoy crossed into Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing despite major disruptions to trade and transport between the two countries.

The trucks carried food and other essential humanitarian supplies for families facing serious shortages. The development provides an important relief channel at a time when millions of Afghans are struggling with hunger and other humanitarian challenges.

UN confirms 724 trucks crossed through Torkham

United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Pakistan Mo Yahya said 724 trucks carrying humanitarian cargo had crossed into Afghanistan through Torkham.

He said the supplies had reached families who needed them most.

Yahya also thanked Islamabad and “all those who made it possible to keep the humanitarian lifeline open.”

The United Nations said the continued movement of humanitarian supplies was important for communities depending on international assistance.

Food and essential supplies included in convoy

Olga Cherevko, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan, said the convoy was carrying “food and other critical humanitarian items”. The supplies are intended to support people facing difficult living conditions across Afghanistan.

Humanitarian organisations have continued to warn about food insecurity and malnutrition in the country. The arrival of the trucks could therefore provide urgently needed assistance to vulnerable families.

Afghanistan faces severe hunger crisis

The latest aid delivery comes as Afghanistan faces a serious humanitarian situation. The World Food Programme warned earlier this month that acute child malnutrition had reached critical levels in the country.

According to the WFP, nearly 14 million Afghans are facing acute hunger.

The food crisis has been worsened by several factors, including natural disasters, economic difficulties and the return of large numbers of Afghans from neighbouring countries.

Millions of Afghans need humanitarian assistance

Afghanistan has faced several major challenges in recent years.

Deadly earthquakes and other climate-related disasters have caused widespread damage and increased pressure on already vulnerable communities. At the same time, millions of Afghans have returned from Iran and Pakistan since 2023.

The return of such a large number of people has placed additional pressure on food supplies, housing, healthcare and other essential services. Humanitarian agencies are therefore relying heavily on continued access to affected communities.

Border closure disrupts aid routes

The delivery of humanitarian supplies has faced major logistical challenges because of tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The land border between the two countries has remained almost completely closed since October 2025 following clashes. The restrictions have disrupted established transport and logistical routes used to deliver humanitarian assistance.

WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau previously told AFP that the conflict and border closure had severely affected routes used to move aid into Afghanistan. The latest movement of more than 700 trucks shows that humanitarian supplies can still reach Afghanistan through an important crossing despite the wider restrictions.

Torkham remains a key humanitarian route

The Torkham crossing is one of the main routes connecting Pakistan and Afghanistan. Its location makes it important for the movement of people, trade and humanitarian supplies between the two countries.

For aid organisations, keeping such routes accessible can be critical when large numbers of people need emergency assistance. The passage of the relief convoy could help humanitarian agencies maintain supplies while other transport routes remain disrupted.

UN appreciates efforts to keep aid moving

The United Nations has welcomed the continued movement of humanitarian cargo into Afghanistan. Mo Yahya’s message thanked Pakistan and others involved in keeping the humanitarian route open.

The UN’s acknowledgement underlines the importance of cooperation when political and security tensions affect normal cross-border movement. Humanitarian organisations need predictable access to vulnerable communities to deliver food and other essential items.

Humanitarian needs remain high

Despite the arrival of the relief convoy, Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs remain significant. Millions of people continue to face food insecurity, while children remain particularly vulnerable to malnutrition.

Natural disasters and population movements have added further pressure to humanitarian programmes. Aid agencies are expected to continue seeking reliable routes to deliver supplies to communities in need.

What the aid convoy means

The arrival of 724 trucks provides a temporary boost to humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan. It also demonstrates the importance of maintaining humanitarian access even when political and security conditions remain difficult.

However, a single convoy cannot resolve the country’s wider food and humanitarian crisis. Continued access, regular aid deliveries and coordination among governments and international organisations will remain important in the months ahead.
