New Zealand announces Skilled Migrant Resident Visa for Pakistani professionals
New Zealand has announced major opportunities for skilled foreign workers under its updated Skilled Migrant Resident Visa program, offering a pathway to permanent residency, employment, and education benefits for qualified professionals worldwide, including applicants from Pakistan.
According to the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment, the visa program is designed for highly skilled workers who wish to settle permanently in New Zealand and contribute to the country’s workforce.
The New Zealand Skilled Migrant Resident Visa allows eligible applicants to live, work, and study in the country indefinitely. Successful applicants can also include their spouse and dependent children up to 24 years of age in the visa application.
Permanent Residency Pathway After Two Years
Authorities said applicants who remain in New Zealand on this visa for two years may become eligible for a permanent resident visa, allowing unrestricted travel in and out of the country.
The initial application fee for the visa has been set at NZD 6,450.
Immigration experts say the scheme is expected to attract thousands of international professionals in sectors facing labor shortages, particularly healthcare, engineering, IT, construction, and technical services.
Eligibility Criteria for New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa
Applicants must meet several requirements to qualify for the Skilled Migrant Resident Visa:

- Candidates should be medically fit and possess good character
- English language proficiency is mandatory
- Applicants must have a job offer or current employment with an accredited employer
- The position must be a skilled full-time job
- Applicants are required to secure at least 6 skilled migrant points
The points can be earned through:
- Professional registration
- Educational qualifications
- Income level
- Skilled work experience in New Zealand
Applicants may also receive up to 3 additional points for relevant New Zealand work experience.

Job Conditions and Salary Requirements
Officials stated that employment under the visa must involve at least 30 working hours per week. Jobs should either be permanent, based on a contract of at least 12 months, or a continuous six-month agreement.
Salary thresholds have also been clarified:
- ANZSCO Levels 1 to 3: minimum NZD 35 per hour
- ANZSCO Levels 4 to 5: minimum NZD 52.50 per hour
These salary conditions are intended to ensure applicants secure genuine skilled employment opportunities in New Zealand.
English Language Rules for Families
The visa rules also apply English language conditions to family members. Spouses and children aged 16 years or older must demonstrate English proficiency. Otherwise, they may need to pay for English language training in New Zealand.
How to Apply for the New Zealand Skilled Migrant Resident Visa
Applicants must complete several stages during the visa process:
1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
2. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) if eligible
3. Submit supporting documents, including:
o Passport
o Medical reports
o Police clearance certificates
4. File the complete visa application within four months
5. Pay the required visa fee
