New market timings announced in Islamabad
Islamabad district administration has announced new business operating hours aimed at promoting energy conservation and reducing electricity consumption across the federal capital.
Under a notification issued by the administration, markets and shopping malls will now be required to close by 8pm. The new schedule came into effect immediately and forms part of broader measures to ensure efficient use of energy resources.
According to officials, restaurants, wedding halls, bakeries, vegetable vendors and grocery stores must shut their businesses by 10pm. The administration has also imposed restrictions on private events and other social gatherings after 10pm.
Authorities said the move is intended to curb unnecessary energy wastage and support national efforts to save electricity at a time when energy efficiency has become a key policy priority.
The district administration warned that the new regulations will be enforced strictly. Businesses found violating the prescribed timings could face legal action. Traders and citizens have been urged to cooperate with authorities to help achieve the government's energy conservation goals.
However, several essential services have been exempted from the restrictions. Pharmacies, hospitals, medical laboratories and medical stores will continue operating according to their normal schedules. Petrol pumps and CNG stations will also remain open under their existing operating hours.
In addition, milk and dairy shops will not be subject to the new closing times. Takeaway and home delivery services have also been exempted, ensuring that residents continue to have access to essential goods and food services without disruption.
Officials believe the initiative will help reduce power consumption while maintaining uninterrupted access to critical public services throughout the city.
