Nawaz Sharif gets new government job
The Punjab government has officially appointed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as chairman of the Lahore Heritage Area Revival Board.
The appointment was approved by the Governor of Punjab and has taken immediate effect.
According to an official notification issued by the Local Government and Community Development Department, the appointment has been made under the Punjab Walled Cities and Heritage Areas Authority Act, 2012. The new Nawaz Sharif job gives him responsibility for leading major heritage conservation projects across Lahore.
What is the Lahore Heritage Area Revival Board?
The Lahore Heritage Area Revival Board has been created to supervise policies and projects aimed at protecting, restoring and revitalising Lahore’s historic areas.
The board will oversee the conservation of Mughal monuments, colonial-era buildings, the Walled City and other important cultural landmarks while promoting tourism and preserving the city's architectural identity.
Heritage restoration projects planned
Officials said the new Lahore Heritage Area Revival Board is part of Punjab’s wider heritage conservation programme launched in 2025.
The restoration programme includes:
- Repairing historic buildings and monuments.
- Conserving Lahore’s Walled City and heritage zones.
- Removing encroachments around protected sites.
- Improving streets and restoring historic building façades.
- Developing pedestrian-friendly heritage corridors.
- Promoting cultural tourism.
The Punjab government has already allocated hundreds of millions of rupees for restoration work at Lahore Fort, Shalimar Gardens, Shahdara Complex and other historic locations.

Why this appointment matters
The new Nawaz Sharif job comes after he was earlier entrusted with supervising Punjab’s heritage restoration agenda, while Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has repeatedly stressed the importance of protecting Lahore’s historic identity.
Officials believe the initiative will help preserve cultural heritage while making historic sites more attractive for local and international visitors.
