Nanbai Association threatens tandoor closure over roti prices

Tandoor owners across Punjab have warned of shutting down their businesses after failing to reach an agreement with the administration over the official price of roti.

The Mutahida Nan Roti Association said it is consulting its members on suspending roti sales or closing tandoors completely if their demands are not met. The association also warned that it may stop selling plain roti and only offer naan and khameeri roti until the pricing issue is resolved.

Nanbais said the administration is forcing them to sell a 100-gram roti for Rs14, which they claim is too low to cover production costs. They demanded that the official price of a roti be increased to Rs25, saying the current rate is causing heavy financial losses.

Association representatives said the prices of flour, gas and shop rent have increased significantly, making it difficult for tandoor owners to continue operating under the current pricing structure. They argued that selling a 100-gram roti for Rs14 does not cover their daily expenses and threatens the sustainability of their businesses.

The association warned that if the government does not revise the official roti price, tandoor owners may have no option but to shut down their businesses, which could affect the availability of one of the province’s most commonly consumed food items.
