(Web Desk): NADRA has made signatures optional for first-time CNIC applicants, introducing “NA” in place of signatures while tightening biometric rules to prevent misuse.

The National Database and Registration Authority has introduced a new rule regarding the issuance of Computerized National Identity Cards (CNIC), making signatures optional for first-time applicants.

According to the new policy, individuals applying for a CNIC for the first time will no longer be required to provide a signature. If an applicant does not submit a signature, the CNIC will display “NA” in the signature field.

Officials said the decision has been taken as part of efforts to simplify the registration process, especially for citizens who are illiterate or unable to sign documents. In such cases, the absence of a signature will not affect the validity of the identity card.

However, authorities have also introduced stricter measures to prevent fraud and misuse. Under the revised rules, fingerprint image uploads will not be used for verification purposes to avoid potential manipulation or misuse of biometric data.

NADRA has also launched an awareness campaign targeting applicants who are unable to read or write, guiding them on how to correctly submit their information during the registration process.

A spokesperson for NADRA advised citizens not to upload fingerprint images when applying through the mobile application, warning that incorrect submissions could delay processing or create verification issues.

Officials said the updated system aims to balance ease of access with stronger security checks, ensuring that identity records remain accurate and protected while making the CNIC issuance process more user-friendly for all citizens.
