The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new QR code-based national identity card in Pakistan, replacing the traditional imported microchip with a locally manufactured secure QR code system.

According to NADRA, the new identity card is produced in Pakistan using polycarbonate material. Its QR code can be scanned with an ordinary smartphone, while the Pak ID mobile application will also provide a facility to verify the card.

The QR code will contain relevant identification information and the cardholder’s photograph. NADRA said the new system is designed to reduce errors in recording names, addresses and other personal information.

Under the new system, authorised organisations including telecom companies, banks, hospitals, railways and police departments will receive software to verify identities through the QR code.

The new card will also include the family number and special symbols for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and organ donors. A separate identification mark will be available for citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Names and addresses will be printed in both Urdu and English, making the card easier to use across different services.

NADRA said the QR code-based card has been introduced gradually from August 14, 2026, replacing the existing card system in phases.

From January 2027, the QR-based system is expected to expand to all national identity card categories, including NICOP and Juvenile Cards.

In the final phase, the Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will also be converted to the chip-free QR code-based format.

NADRA clarified that existing identity cards will remain valid until their stated expiry dates.
