Lahore (Web Desk): Lahore Traffic Police has prepared a major safety plan for Basant 2027, with safety rods planned for 2.3 million motorcycles and stricter rules for bikers across the city.

100 camps to install safety rods

Traffic police will establish 100 camps at important locations across Lahore to help motorcyclists get safety rods installed. The camps are expected to make the process easier for bikers and allow a large number of motorcycles to be covered before the festival.

According to the plan, a public awareness campaign will begin on November 1. The installation of safety rods will then start on January 1, 2027.

The campaign is expected to give motorcyclists time to prepare their bikes before Basant. Officials have also urged citizens to follow safety instructions and cooperate with traffic authorities.

Previous Basant saw one million rods installed

Traffic authorities had also focused on motorcycle safety during the previous Basant celebrations.

Around one million bikers were provided with safety rods during the earlier festival. For Basant 2027, the proposed target is significantly larger, with the traffic police planning to cover 2.3 million motorcycles.

Recent government planning for Basant 2027 has also called for safety rods to be installed on more than two million motorcycles in Lahore. The larger target reflects the authorities’ focus on reducing risks to motorcyclists during kite-flying activities.

Helmet rules to become stricter

The traffic plan also includes stricter helmet requirements for motorcyclists. In cases of double riding, both people on the motorcycle will be required to wear helmets.

The rule is aimed at improving protection for both the rider and passenger. Traffic officials are expected to monitor compliance with the helmet requirement during the festival.

The measure comes as authorities continue to focus on reducing motorcycle-related injuries in Lahore. Motorcyclists have also previously been required to install safety rods as part of Basant safety arrangements.

No safety rod, no entry at city points

Another important part of the plan concerns motorcycles entering Lahore.

Bikers without safety rods will not be allowed to enter the city through designated entry and exit points during Basant, according to the traffic plan. The restriction is intended to ensure that motorcycles on Lahore’s roads meet the required safety standards.

Motorcycles and Qingqi rickshaws will also be barred from entering areas declared as red zones during the festival. The restrictions are expected to be enforced during the designated Basant period.

Red zones to face tighter controls

Red zones will receive special attention during Basant because of the increased safety risks associated with kite flying.

Traffic police will monitor movement in these areas and restrict vehicles that do not meet the required safety conditions. The use of safety rods is intended to provide an additional layer of protection for motorcyclists against kite strings.

Authorities had also divided Lahore into different risk zones during the previous Basant and introduced special safety measures for motorcyclists. The latest plan continues that focus while expanding the number of motorcycles targeted for safety rod installation.

Three-phase safety plan

According to CTO Abdul Rahim Shirazi, the Basant safety plan will be implemented in three phases.

The first phase will focus on public awareness.

During this stage, traffic authorities will inform citizens about safety rules and explain the importance of installing safety rods and wearing helmets.

The second phase will focus on implementation.

This will include the installation of safety rods and preparation of traffic arrangements across the city.

The final phase will focus on enforcement. Traffic police will monitor compliance and take action against violations during the festival.

Safety remains central to Basant preparations

The safety plan comes as Punjab authorities prepare for Basant 2027 in Lahore.

The festival has been scheduled for March 12 to 14, 2027, with authorities planning strict safety measures before and during the event. Officials have also issued instructions regarding rooftops, power lines, and other potential hazards.

The Punjab government has directed authorities to ensure that unsafe rooftops are not used for kite flying and that necessary safety arrangements are completed before the festival. These measures are part of a wider effort to control risks associated with kite flying and protect residents.

Traffic police prepare for larger challenge

Installing safety rods on millions of motorcycles will be a major task for Lahore Traffic Police.

The planned 100 camps will play an important role in handling the large number of motorcycles expected to require installation. The awareness campaign is also expected to encourage bikers to get the rods installed before enforcement begins.

Traffic officials will have to coordinate installation, public awareness, and enforcement activities across the city. The aim is to ensure that safety requirements are understood before Basant begins.

Citizens urged to follow safety rules

Motorcyclists will be expected to cooperate with traffic authorities and follow the safety requirements during Basant.

Bikers should ensure their motorcycles have the required safety rods before travelling in restricted areas. Those travelling with passengers will also need to make sure both people are wearing helmets.

The authorities’ three-phase approach is designed to give citizens information and time to comply before enforcement begins. The success of the plan will depend on how effectively the rules are implemented across Lahore.
