KARACHI (Web Desk): Police have arrested 31 suspects after celebratory firing during Independence Day celebrations in Karachi killed a woman and injured 93 others.

According to police, weapons allegedly used in the aerial firing were also recovered from the possession of the arrested suspects.

The arrests were made during operations in several parts of the city as authorities stepped up action against those involved in celebratory firing. Police said further action would continue against people involved in aerial firing and other activities that put public safety at risk.

Suspects arrested from several areas of Karachi

The suspects were arrested from Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Sachal, Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, SITE Super Highway, Korangi, Gulbahar and Rizvia, among other areas. Police said operations were launched to identify and arrest people involved in aerial firing during the Independence Day celebrations.

Authorities also recovered weapons from the suspects, according to police. Further investigations are underway to determine the suspects’ alleged involvement in the firing incidents.

Woman dies after being hit by stray bullet

The woman was critically injured after being struck by a bullet fired from an unknown direction in the Sarafa Bazaar area of Paposh Nagar. She was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in critical condition but later died from her injuries.

Her death highlighted the deadly consequences of aerial firing, which was reported in several areas of Karachi as Independence Day celebrations began. Police are investigating the incident to identify the person responsible for the fatal shooting.

Celebrations turn dangerous after midnight

As the clock struck 12am and August 14 began, people across Karachi came out onto streets and rooftops to celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day. While many citizens marked the occasion with flags, music and other celebrations, some people resorted to aerial firing.

The dangerous practice resulted in injuries in different parts of the city, while a woman lost her life. Police reported 93 injuries in connection with aerial firing incidents during the celebrations.

Police intensify crackdown on aerial firing

Following the incidents, police intensified their crackdown against people involved in celebratory firing. Officials said aerial firing is a dangerous activity that can seriously injure or kill innocent people, even when shots are fired into the air.

The arrests of 31 suspects and the recovery of weapons are part of the ongoing action against those accused of endangering public safety. Police said operations would continue and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in aerial firing.

Why aerial firing remains a serious danger

Bullets fired into the air can fall back to the ground and strike people who have no connection to the celebrations. Such incidents can quickly turn a moment of celebration into tragedy, particularly in densely populated areas.

The death of the woman and injuries to 93 people underline the serious risks associated with celebratory firing. Authorities have repeatedly urged citizens to avoid aerial firing and celebrate national occasions responsibly.

What the latest crackdown means

The arrests show that police are taking action against people allegedly involved in aerial firing during Independence Day celebrations. However, the number of injuries also highlights the need for greater public awareness about the dangers of firing into the air.

Authorities are expected to continue operations in different parts of Karachi to identify and arrest other suspects. The tragedy serves as a reminder that celebrations should not come at the cost of public safety or human lives.
