LAHORE (Web Desk): India has released water from Bhakra Dam, triggering a fresh Pakistan flood alert as authorities warned that the next 24 hours will be critical due to the growing risk of River Sutlej flooding.

Officials said the latest Bhakra Dam water release came after increased flows from the Salal Dam, raising concerns that river levels could continue rising across several districts in Punjab.

According to flood monitoring authorities, River Sutlej flooding remains a serious concern, with Kasur and Okara among the areas that could face flooding if water levels continue to increase. Officials have issued a flood alert and advised residents living near the river to stay prepared.

The water flow in the River Chenab has also increased significantly. Medium to high-level flooding is expected at Head Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad, while Head Balloki and Sadhnai are also experiencing flood conditions. Low-level flooding has been reported at Mangla and Trimmu.

Authorities said the flow at Head Panjnad has jumped from 17,000 cusecs to 80,000 cusecs and could reach 140,000 cusecs within the next few hours if the Bhakra Dam water release continues.

Floodwaters have already entered nearby settlements in Jhang, creating problems for residents. In Chiniot, several villages have been submerged as river levels continue to rise.

In Pasrur, agricultural land has suffered damage after a breach in the Dhek drain. Meanwhile, severe soil erosion has been reported in Layyah’s Samra Nashib area along the River Indus, increasing risks for nearby communities.

Emergency teams remain on high alert as India releases water from Bhakra Dam for the latest time. Officials said the ongoing Pakistan flood alert will remain in place until river levels begin to stabilize.

They also warned that River Sutlej flooding could worsen if heavy rainfall combines with another Bhakra Dam water release.

Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers and follow official instructions.

Authorities said rescue teams are ready to respond if conditions deteriorate further because India releases water from Bhakra Dam has significantly increased the possibility of River Sutlej flooding.
