Rawalpindi (Web Desk): Heavy rain has flooded low-lying areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, while rising water levels in Nullah Lai have prompted evacuation warnings for nearby residents.

According to the district administration, the water level at Kattarian reached 20 feet, while the level at Gawalmandi Bridge was recorded at 17 feet.  Warning sirens were sounded in areas surrounding Nullah Lai, and residents were urged to remain alert and move to safer places if necessary.

Residents along Nullah Lai urged to evacuate

Authorities instructed people living along Nullah Lai to evacuate immediately as the water level continued to rise. Floodwater reportedly entered several homes in Dhok Khabba and Sadiqabad, causing concern among residents.

Emergency teams and local authorities remained alert as heavy rainfall continued to affect different parts of the twin cities. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been urged to follow official instructions and avoid unnecessary movement near water channels.

Golra records highest rainfall

Rainfall data showed that Golra received the highest amount of rainfall, recording 144mm.

Bokra received 132mm, followed by Pirwadhai with 105mm and Gawalmandi with 77mm.

The heavy downpour caused water to accumulate on roads and in low-lying areas, affecting normal movement in several parts of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Authorities continued to monitor the weather situation and water levels in Nullah Lai.

Heavy rain also hits other Punjab cities

Heavy rainfall was also reported in Gujrat, Sialkot, Jhelum, Shakargarh and surrounding areas. Several electricity feeders tripped during the rain, disrupting power supplies in some affected localities.

The widespread rainfall has added to concerns about urban flooding and possible disruptions to daily life. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and water accumulation.

PMD warns of more monsoon rain

The latest rainfall comes after the Pakistan Meteorological Department issued an alert for the sixth spell of monsoon rains across Punjab. The weather department has forecast more rain in different parts of the country through August 21.

The continued wet spell could increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and put additional pressure on urban drainage systems. Residents have been advised to stay updated on weather warnings and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Urban flooding risk in some areas

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of Mardan and Swabi. Heavy rainfall can cause water to accumulate quickly in areas with poor drainage, disrupting traffic and affecting homes and businesses.

Authorities are monitoring vulnerable areas as the monsoon system continues to bring rain to different parts of the country. People living near streams, nullahs and other waterways have been advised to remain particularly cautious.

Landslide warning issued for mountainous regions

The weather department has also warned of possible landslides in mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir. Persistent or heavy rainfall can trigger landslides and disrupt road travel in mountainous regions.

Travellers have been advised to remain cautious while travelling through vulnerable areas during the rainy spell. Local authorities may issue further advisories depending on weather conditions and the intensity of rainfall.

What the rising water level means for the twin cities

The rising water level in Nullah Lai has once again highlighted the flood risk faced by low-lying areas of Rawalpindi during periods of heavy monsoon rain. The immediate concern is the safety of people living near the waterway, particularly in areas where floodwater has already entered homes.

With more rainfall forecast through August 21, authorities are likely to continue monitoring water levels and weather conditions closely. Residents have been urged to remain alert and take evacuation warnings seriously.
