Gilgit-Baltistan proposes direct flights to China

The proposal aims to improve air links between northern Pakistan and China’s Xinjiang region, making travel easier for tourists, businesspeople, and investors. The plan was discussed during a meeting between Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain Azar and Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong.

The chief minister said direct flights between Skardu and Kashgar could strengthen people-to-people ties and enhance economic cooperation between Gilgit-Baltistan and China’s Xinjiang region. He said the proposed route would create new opportunities for tourism, trade, and investment while making travel more convenient for visitors from both countries.

During the meeting, the Gilgit-Baltistan government also proposed introducing a visa-on-arrival facility for Chinese tourists visiting popular destinations such as Hunza, subject to approval by the federal government.

The chief minister invited Chinese companies to invest in Gilgit-Baltistan’s tourism, mining, hydropower, renewable energy, and infrastructure sectors. Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong welcomed the proposals and said they would be forwarded to the relevant authorities in China for consideration.

If approved, the direct flight service could become a major step towards strengthening connectivity between Pakistan and China while unlocking new opportunities for tourism, trade, and regional economic development.
