Election Commission announces date for AJK general elections
The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has officially announced the date for the upcoming general elections, setting the stage for a major political contest across the region.
According to the Election Commission, voters in Azad Kashmir will cast their ballots on July 27 to elect representatives to the new Legislative Assembly. The announcement comes at a time when political activity is increasing across the region, with political parties expected to accelerate their campaign efforts ahead of the elections.
Meanwhile, the AJK Legislative Assembly recently passed a resolution supporting the retention of 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees. The resolution described refugee representation as a historical and constitutional reality that remains an important part of the region’s political structure.

The assembly stated that any electoral challenges or complexities should be addressed through reforms that are acceptable to all political stakeholders. It further emphasized that constitutional amendments fall within the authority of the elected assembly and should be handled through proper legislative procedures.
The resolution also called for broader consultations with political parties, bar associations, the bar council, civil society representatives, and constitutional experts to ensure that any future reforms are based on consensus.
With the election date now confirmed, political parties are expected to intensify their preparations, while discussions on electoral reforms and refugee representation are likely to remain key issues during the campaign period.
