Dual citizenship rules 2026: Civil servants get deadline to submit details
Govt sets one-week deadline
The Establishment Division has issued an office memorandum regarding implementation of the Foreign Citizenship Rules 2026 for civil servants. Under the new instructions, government officers must submit declarations about their foreign citizenship and related details.
Officials will have to provide information about any foreign citizenship they hold. Details of foreign travel documents and marriage to a foreign citizen will also have to be included.
Dependent family members also covered
The declaration will not be limited to the civil servants themselves. Officers must also provide details of foreign citizenship held by their dependents.
The instructions apply to the information required under the new rules. Officials have been given one week to submit the required declarations.
Failure to submit declaration may lead to action
The Establishment Division has warned that officers who fail to submit their declarations within the given period may face departmental action. The requirement is part of the government’s implementation of the Foreign Citizenship Rules 2026.
The memorandum also addresses incorrect information in declarations. Providing false information or submitting a false declaration will be considered misconduct.
Provincial authorities also directed
Action against officials for misconduct will be taken under the Efficiency and Discipline Rules 2020. The rules provide the framework for departmental proceedings in such cases.
Chief secretaries and provincial police chiefs have also been directed to ensure similar action where required. The instructions are intended to ensure compliance with the foreign citizenship declaration requirements across government departments.
Analysis
The new requirement places greater responsibility on civil servants to disclose foreign citizenship and related information. The one-week deadline also means officials will need to complete the process within a limited period.
The instructions cover both officers and their dependents, making the declaration process broader. Officials may also face disciplinary proceedings if they fail to comply or provide incorrect information.
