ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): The federal government has reduced electricity prices by Rs1.99 per unit under the Quarterly Tariff Adjustment (QTA) mechanism, providing financial relief to consumers across Pakistan.

Electricity prices reduced by Rs1.99 per unit as consumers receive relief under the quarterly tariff adjustment. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a notification confirming that the reduction will remain effective for three months, from June to August 2026.

According to the notification, the tariff reduction has been approved under the quarterly adjustment for the January to March 2026 period. The decision is expected to provide total relief of approximately Rs67.17 billion to electricity consumers.

The reduction applies to all consumer categories across the country, including K-Electric customers. However, lifeline consumers, consumers billed under the incremental consumption package, and prepaid consumers will not be covered under this adjustment. NEPRA said the reduction reflects the combined impact of various adjustments made during the quarterly tariff review process.

The latest cut is expected to lower electricity bills for households and businesses at a time when consumers are facing rising living and operating costs. Meanwhile, the government is also working on a new Solar Wheeling Policy, also known as the Energy Wheeling Policy, which could provide another affordable electricity option in the future.

Under the proposed policy, consumers and businesses will be able to generate solar power at one location and use the resulting energy credits at another location through the national grid. The policy is expected to benefit individuals and businesses that own land in rural areas but live or operate in major cities where installing solar systems is difficult or costly.

Following a meeting between the business community and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Usman Shaukat shared details of the proposed initiative.

He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed business leaders that the government is actively working on a solar wheeling framework aimed at expanding access to low-cost renewable energy.
