CM Maryam reaffirms commitment to smoke-free institutions
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has called on people to quit smoking and adopt a healthier lifestyle, describing tobacco use as a major threat to public health and a leading cause of preventable diseases and deaths.
In her message on World No-Tobacco Day, the chief minister said tobacco consumption can be more dangerous than many serious illnesses and remains one of the biggest health challenges facing society. She said every puff of tobacco brings people closer to disease and warned that smoking not only damages health but also affects a person’s financial well-being and social life.
Maryam Nawaz expressed concern over the high number of tobacco-related deaths in the country, saying that more than 250,000 deaths linked to tobacco use are alarming and deeply concerning.
The chief minister stated that the Punjab government is taking practical steps to implement a complete ban on smoking in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions throughout the province. She added that smoking in government offices, public transport, and other public places is a punishable offence, and strict enforcement of relevant laws will be ensured.

Expressing concern over the growing use of tobacco products and vaping among young people, she said smoking and e-cigarette use can contribute to heart disease and other serious health complications.
Maryam Nawaz said protecting the younger generation from tobacco addiction is among the government’s top priorities, and all possible measures will be taken to achieve this goal. She emphasized that creating awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco is not only the government's responsibility, but also a shared responsibility of society.
The chief minister urged citizens to provide their families with a healthy, smoke-free environment and encouraged everyone to commit to quitting smoking and embracing a healthier way of life.
